MINREM and Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL) got Trademark Registration for Educational and Supply and Management of Electricity Services
Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL), now-a-days the word is known to everyone. Being one of subsidiary to Coal India Limited, it was incorporated in 1992 with its headquarter at Sambalpur. It has also its office at Bhubaneswar, Odisha. In 2016, MCL becomes India’s largest coal producing company. Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL), a company which aims at production, distribution and collection of electricity is also incorporated as subsidiary to MCL in 2011. MCL Institute of Natural Resources and Energy Management (MINREM), a training Institute was established in 2014, under the supervision of MBPL.
MBPL aims at production, distribution and supply of electricity in a sufficient manner to overcome the energy problems in Odisha. It not only focuses upon energy management but also upon conservation and utilisation of natural resources of Odisha.
In the present competitive market place, registration of a trademark becomes essential for any Company, Organisation or Individual to distinguish and protect their goods and services from others. Registration also helps the owners, in creating a brand value of the mark for their products/services among the consumers.
Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL) becomes popular for its service of distribution and electricity of supply and MCL Institute of Natural Resources and Energy Management (MINREM) gets reputed for providing education, training and arranging workshop, seminar for utilization and conservation of various natural resources in proper way, for creating awareness about welfare and development of human being as well as natural resources. In such circumstances L.N Mishra, one of the Director and owner of MBPL felt it is necessary to protect their company with the name of ‘Mahanadi Basin Power Limited’ and the Institute with the name of ‘MCL INSTITUTE OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT (MINREM)’ though trademark registration, for which he consulted with Lex Protector International Law Office.
They seek for registration for their brand names with the mark and logo of ‘Mahanadi Basin Power Limited’, ‘MINREM’ and ‘MINREM NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT’. Lex Protector helps and assisted them in the registration of their marks.

The trademark was applied for registration in several classes as its services fall in different classes in accordance with their categories. ‘Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL)’ was applied in class 39 for its distribution and supply of electricity services, ‘MINREM’ and ‘MINREM NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT’ was applied in class 41 for education and training service.
After filing, no objection was raised by Indian Trademark Registry and the trademark application was published in the trademark journal for opposition by third party. However, no one has opposed the mark.
As there was no objection and opposition raised for these trademarks, in 2017, ‘Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL)’ and ‘MINREM’ and ‘MINREM NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT’ got registered and trademark registration certificate was issued by the Registry. Upon successful registration now, these trademarks has got more protection against infringement by others, the companies MCl and MBPL also gained more reputation in India.
