Today’s Patent- Improved Sweeping Machine
On this day in the year 1869 IVEs W. MCGAFFEY got the patent over an improved version of a sweeping machine.
This Patent protection was granted by USPTO with patent no. US91145. The invention is a mechanical vacuum cleaner that worked based on the principle of suction of air caused by the rotation of wheel attached to bag which was termed to variable pressure by the rotation of wheel which was attached to strings that would tighten/ loosen up based on the direction and number of rotations. For the year 1869 this was a really advanced form of vacuum cleaner. However, this invention was not a success because, the device was bulky and was operated by a belt driven fan cranked by hand which made this awkward to use.
