Trademark of the Week- HSBC
On June 8, 1994 HSBC got its mark registered in UK Intellectual Property Office with the registration number 1574618. We have selected HSBC as trademark of the week to acknowledge this date as well as to acknowledge the tremendous status of the Bank. HSBC also got registration over its mark in USPTO on September 17, 1996, with registration number 2000657.
HSBC started as Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation Ltd in Hong Kong on 3rd March, 1865. HSBC was founded by Sir Thomas Sutherland. It was the first locally owned and managed bank. It still remains the largest bank in Hong Kong, and to this day remains one of the three banks to issue notes in Hong Kong. In 1991, Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation established HSBC Holdings Public Limited Company in London. HSBC name is derived from the initials of Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation. After the establishment of HSBC Holding plc, the Bank shifted its headquarters to London. The Bank still looks at both UK and Hong Kong as its home market.
In November 1998, HSBC announced the adoption of a unified brand, using HSBC and the hexagon symbol everywhere it operated, with the aim of enhancing recognition of HSBC by customers, shareholders and staff throughout the world. HSBC operations are in four fields; namely Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets, Private Banking, and Retail Banking with Wealth Management. Today, HSBC has in its portfolio 38 million customers spread across 67 countries and territories.
It is the 7th largest bank in the world and the largest in Europe by assets. It is the 6th largest bank in the world by market capitalisation. Also, it is the 2nd largest company listed on London Stock Exchange. It is a Fortune Global 500 company, occupying the 88th position in the list.
