Patent of the Week-Street-cleaning machinery
Today everyone wants to live in such a place which must be hygiene and clean as we all are cautious for our health. Streets or roads in cities or villages is one of the important part which need to be cleaned to maintain a healthy surrounding and environment.
That’s why we must have seen there are people engaged in the work of cleaning the streets and especially we can find street sweepers in an urban area. Since sanitation and waste removal now-a-days has become a priority to maintain healthy atmosphere, street sweepers have been employed in most of the cities.
To simplify their work there are different types of Street-cleaning machines available, which help them to clean more within less time. William Erastus Williams came up with a new and useful improvement in Street-Cleaning Machinery which got patent protection with the Patent Number US1181279A on May 2nd, 1916.
Through this invention, he introduced a street cleaning machinery whose purpose was to automatically collect all the materials found on the street including even small stones and the like materials and semi-liquid materials.
There is a carrier box provided in the machine in which this collected material is deposited, which in turn can be discharged in a vehicle or a dumpster. The machine looks like a modern motor truck having an iron frame, wheels, front cooling, driver’s seat, steering wheel, an ordinary gear box and chain drive for rear wheels.
An auxiliary engine is provided for driving the cleaning mechanism. This is done so that the ordinary motor engine is only confined to moving the vehicle.
There is also a brush mounted across the machine, which throws the sweepings upwards and forward in the inner side of the machine belt. This sweeping collected in this belt, mainly in the centre of the belt, is then discharged downwards in the sweeping box.
