Patent of the week- Mattress
We use mattresses mainly for reclining and sleeping in our day-to-day life. They are large cushions which are used as beds themselves or more commonly on bed frames. Mattresses are mostly filled with soft material to provide comfort to the resting human. Now-a-days, we can find different kind of mattresses in market with different design and materials. Earlier mattresses were filled with natural materials but with modernization, synthetic materials gained prominence. Presently, even water and air is used to fill up mattresses.
The patent being discussed here is about improvements made to mattresses, by William Robertson which got patent protection with the Patent number US811094A on January 30, 1906. Improvement specifically made to incombustible mattresses constructed of resilient metal fibers, such as steel wool. Before this improvement was made, mattresses were mostly filled with various kinds of vegetable and animal fibers. These material weren’t particularly resilient and moreover were cause of diseases to the user as the material were prone to being permeated
But this invention improved the quality of mattresses and made it safe, by introducing new functions in it. The object of this invention is to provide a resilient, incombustible material which could conduct electric current to maintain temperature and provide electrical treatment to patients conveniently.
